Spotlight on Denver

Having spent several years living in Colorado, I know first-hand the beauty and majesty of the mountains as well as the snow packed slopes, warm cozy fires, hot cocoa and the occasional hot toddie. Known world-wide for its' winter ski and snow sports, many may not realize that Colorado offers much for the eclectic shopper! Take a break from the slopes and make your way into Denver, this season's 'must-visit' local!

When talking about Colorado, I knew that I would need to call upon our, 'Just a Thought' Editor-at-Large, Jalyn Webb. Having traveled and shopped the world, Jalyn has settled into Colorado for a long winter's nap. Having personally shopped with this dynamic fashion maven, I am convinced that she is a wizard when it comes to finding just the right 'something' to go with 'anything!' Once she whisks you through a whirlwind shopping adventure, she also knows the best spots in Denver to tickle your taste buds. Read on for Denver delights with Jalyn Webb...

Welcome to the place that I like to call home, Colorado! Pack your bags and instead of hitting the slopes, make your way to Denver and check into The Hotel Monaco, a luxury boutique -- very retro -- very cool. In fact, when you check in, they have a goldfish sent to your room to keep you company! After you and 'goldy' get setteled in, make reservations at the restaurant, Panzano, contemporary Italian cuisine featuring homemade pastas. Yumm.... And no stay is complete without a treatment (or two) from the Rennaisance Aveda Spa. Divine...

My favorite area in Denver is in Highland..32nd and Lowell. There is a FAB restaraunt called BANG (303.455.1117)! They don't take reservations and it is down an alley and really hidden away -- but, it is the BEST food! Kind of 'funky americana' -- salmon with a creamy wasabi sauce and jasmine rice, meatloaf, fried catfish, and warm gingerbread with creme fraiche for dessert -- and all entrees are around $15 to $20 bucks -- very reasonable.

But, we're just gettring started...

Around the corner from BANG are two great stores, The Perfect Petal and Real Baby (303.477.2229). The perfect Petal is flowers, of course, but also jewelry, hilarious cards, Tocca candles and great gifts. Real Baby is a fab baby gift store that has really funny stuff including my favorite line of baby clothing called "Wry Baby"-- onesies that say "I Can't Read" or "I Might Barf" and "My Mommy Drinks Because I Cry".....very fun and kitchy.

Swank Space is also in this neighborhood -- funky home furnishing store where the look is flexible, functional and stylish.

For curvy style and fashion, make sure to drop in to Mariel's. They carry Coco and Juan, one of my favorites.

The 16th Street Mall Pavillion, named the #1 metro tourist attraction, is the centerpiece of Downtown Denver. This 16-block long pedestrian and transitway mall offers more than 50 shops and restaurants and features the FREE 16th Street Mall shuttle. Check it out!

Cherry Creek North is home to more than 320 unique stores, boutiques, spas, restaurants, galleries and specialty shops! Favorite restaurants include North (720.941.7700) for modern italian cuisine and the Cherry Cricket which is a great 'burgers and fries' joint that has been around since the 50's -- a great bargain for lunch at under ten bucks! Once your taste buds are satiated, check out the John Atencio flagship for amazing jewelry and Z Gallerie for home furniture and decor.
