The Reality of Planning a Winter Wedding

winter wedding

Depending on where a Bride and Groom live, planning a winter wedding can be quite a job in itself. As beautiful as the season may be, there are a lot of factors to take into consideration.

Winter certainly is a beautiful time of year to get married and the scenery can be breathtaking, but winter can bring inclement weather to those living in the North, East and Midwest.  Even brides in the South and West may encounter unpredictable weather like rain and a chill in the air.

Some people think that having a Christmas Day or New Year’s wedding would be a great idea. My honest opinion is it probably shouldn't be held on Christmas or New Year's: this includes Christmas and New Year's Eve, as well.  The chances of finding a reasonably priced venue will be most difficult. Remember these points: Any venue you choose will need to charge you a higher than usual price for the simple fact that they will need to pay their employees holiday pay which in some states equals to double the usual pay.  Also you do not want to make your invited guests feel as if they must choose between your wedding and perhaps, their traditional holiday plans.

A big plus for choosing a wedding date during winter months is that it will more then likely cut back on your decorating costs!  For example a number of churches and other public venues decorate for Christmas, so if a couple marries in a church; they will most likely not have to do much decorating. Other venues suitable for weddings such as a banquet hall, hotel, or country club may also have a lot of Christmas decor in place.

Another advantage of a winter wedding is that the bride can comfortably choose a more elaborate gown. What would be torturously hot in the summer will not feel so warm in the winter. She can choose richer fabrics, even velvet.  A bride can even have long sleeves and a higher neckline, all without being too warm. Her bridesmaids also have the choice of more luxurious fabrics, long sleeves, or jackets.

Another reality of planning a winter wedding is guests coming from out of town.  Unpredictable weather in one part of the country can delay flights all over. It can also make for hazardous driving. If a Bride and Groom live in a region prone to winter weather and they have many invited guests whom would normally fly in, but realistically, should make it clear to their guests that they are under no obligation to travel in hazardous weather.

The stress of planning a Winter Wedding has caused many a Bride and Groom to consider another option: a destination wedding.  This idea has become very popular over the past few years.  Imagine your wedding in the middle of the winter -- but in a warmer clime. Some couples head south to Virgin Islands or the Caribbean for their winter weddings. When a wedding and the cost of the reception and honeymoon are calculated, this option can be very cost-effective.
